07 Jul Tips For AC Duct Installation And AC Duct Repair
Although ductless air conditioners are becoming increasingly popular in the US, most homes continue to have ducted air conditioning systems. The ducted system involves a network of ducts (in the attic) that facilitate air passage from air handler to the vented outlets in rooms. Here are certain AC duct installation and AC duct repair tips to help you, whether you are setting up the system on your own or getting professional help.
AC Duct Installation/Repair: Key Tips
First, gather the tools required for AC duct installation or AC duct repair, which include duct board, connectors, diffusers, hangers, foil tape, hammer, nails, square, razor knife, zip ties and measuring tape. After you have procured these:
Select an air duct: There are different kinds of ducts – sheet metal, spiral and fiberglass. The sheet metal variety is rectangular and usually used in commercial applications. These are relatively inexpensive, but noisier and susceptible to leakage and condensation. Spiral metal ducts are round in shape and can be twisted in different angles. Insulated ducting is the most effective duct system. This is made either as a fiberglass duct board or a flex duct. Both are lined with foil for insulation purposes. Air is transported to the supply vents of a duct board through flex duct hoses.
Determine design and quantity: A sketch of the intended duct work is extremely useful, as you must be sure of:
1. The number of rooms that require air supply
2. The distance that needs to be covered by the duct
3. The way in which air will travel
Purchase the ducts only after calculating the measurements.
Install the duct: Use the design to cut the main duct work.
The duct should look like a box. After making the initial section, attach the duct to the air handler. Cut out an opening to fix the diffuser on the handler. Install a hanger at the other duct end. Pin one hanger end to a support. Wrap the free end round the duct. Pull it up according to your requirement. Nail the other end. Connect the remaining parts of the device to the connectors. Add as many hangers as you want in the same way. When this is done, run the flex ducts to the room’s supply vent. Fix the flex duct to the board with a zip tie. Attach the free end to the metal diffuser. Insert the metal diffuser into the hole in the ceiling.
Test the installation: After completion, run the AC to check whether air is being vented out in each room.
AC installations must be undertaken with the greatest care or else future problems could occur with the system. Set your AC duct system with our best AC Duct Installation and repair tips.
